Five Things I LOVE About Summer

Erica at Scottsville has tagged me today. The topic is one of my favorite seasons...SUMMER.

And I started out with just five but truth is I couldn't make up my mind...there are so many things that I love about Summer. So many that I always start getting blue when the days start getting shorter. And as much as I love new school supplies and the fall colors, I must admit to getting a little teary when they appear in the stores, because I know that soon we will have to say goodbye to Summer.

Fortunately, the sadness goes quickly, though, as the beauty of an Northeastern fall sets in. Our Falls are full with vacation, birthdays and of course the beginning of our home school year.

I was thinking that Summer was so quick and we didn't do much this year but as I went back through about 2000, yes you did read that right, 2000 pictures since Mother's Day I was suprised at how busy we really have been. So here they are, my five, or twenty-five, or actually 36 or maybe more, I lost count a few times, things that I LOVE most about Summer.

The Bonnets- yes that is Sam. We were praying in church when I felt him fidgeting. I looked up and he had put Elisabeth's bonnet on his head. I grabbed my camera and snapped a shot as discretely as possible. Which, in our small congregation, is not discreet at all. But who could resist that?

Iced Coffee- When dear husband comes home from a meeting he will often stop and pick up a couple of coffees for us to sit and enjoy together. Elisabeth must have his immediate attention when he gets to the door, though. She is a big time daddy's girl.

Blueberry picking, or eating.

Walking out to my garden to get fresh veggies for dinner.

The flowers

The pool

Picnics at Baker Park

The Summer Reading Programs at the Library, Borders and Barnes and Noble. The kids made this board up on a rainy day to track everyone's progress.

Graduations-my nephew who was born 3 months before Kaitlin on the same day as Brianna's birthday graduated this June.

Finding new ways to get Pa wet-and they come up with some good ones! When the water balloon didn't get him wet enough they tackled him and dumped the whole bucket over his head for good measure. Ellie had to get in on it even though she had no idea what was going on!

Samuel's birthday on June 11th

My brother Frank's Birthday on June 2

Hard work together on whatever the summer home improvement project may be.

Ice Cream-I don't really care for ice cream as much as I love to watch the kids eat it. I only like Edy's grand light...and occasionally some Rita's Italian ice.

The Camper-I know my initial reaction was to hate the camper-but it turned out to be so much fun for the kids!

Water Balloons

Strawberry Picking

Hikes in the woods

The creek

Late Nights outdoors being silly

bon fires and campfires

The Hammock

the sandbox and the swingset

Musical chairs

Riding bikes

Visiting friends and family

Evenings on the deck

Badminton tournaments

Did I say late nights out of doors? This is one of my all time favorite summer things...long days and late nights together just doing NOTHING!

Side walk chalk...I flower Mama...Aedan wrote that for me...he thought I heart Mama was overstated and since I like flowers so well...I can't get the picture to upload horizontally no matter how I turn it...

Playing in the rain

Barbecue cooking

Corn on the cob for breakfast on harvest day-when it is time to harvest the corn we put on a pot of boiling water and pick it and cook it up right off for that is what summer is about...the corn on the cob in Maryland, no offense, is the best anyway! This year we had "Gotta Have it Bread and Butter" which beat out the long time champ "silver queen" for the best tasting corn anywhere!

Flowers lovingly picked by my babies lining the windowsill in the kitchen. I have been known to leave the last ones there for months, even when they are all dried up... just to remember that Summer flowers will come again.

And if you made it to the end, you will know that I am going to tag...

  3. Wow! I love all of these pictures. I feel like I know your family a lot better now. All the things you love about summer are just wonderful! I completely agree! Love the hammock picture! Have a wonderful summer day! There aren't many left!

  4. Wow! What a great list. Your garden is inspiring. Very pretty. I must do better next year.

I love summer too! I love starting school, but I don't want summer to end. How weird is that?

  5. Great pictures! And all very good reasons to love summer.

  6. Kat,

Oh like I could top that montage of pictures of summer, I was waiting for the background music to come on behind it, something musical and soft. Now I know what you mean when you said I have time.

Hmmm, at least it gives me something to do and something to post about today. I was just wondering what I was going to write about today. I love all of yours, by the way, this just reminds me that I don't take enough pictures of our family doing much of anything.

Oh how I know my family will begin to dread the sight of mom with a camera in the weeks to come, just as soon as I can get out of bed.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

  7. Wow you had a list of loves of summer! Those were all great and now I know why you are so sad to see summer end soon. Great great great pictures of a very busy and fun summer!

  8. Kat,

Two hours later and I am finished with my post. First I thought, oh man what a pain to find all those pictures, but then it was like, which ones do I put in and which do I leave out.

Thanks for including me in this, you were right. It gave me something to do and it made my day just that much brighter.

    Love and Hugs ~ Kat

  12. Wow! What a great post! Don't know if I have that many great pictures, but I'll try..

My first night without my hubby went ok. Since we had the girls friends staying, one of our dogs was a little anxious.. but hopefully tonight will be better.. though it is kind of weird.

  13. Wow, I very much enjoyed this post! The hammock looks perfect. The progress board your kids made for the Summer Reading Programs is AWESOME!! I did a post a little while back on participating in the Summer Reading programs too! You can check it out if you'd like. Next year I am going to copy your progress board idea. :)

  14. Ok, that was wonderful! And I needed to think about loving summer. I don't think I have fully loved this summer and it is slipping away. Good inspiration to "Seize the Summer" and love it while I can!
Thank you also for your comments on my blog. They always make me smile. Have a great day!
