In All Things Give Thanks

Sometimes when it rains it pours. And it always seems to be when my dear husband is out of town. This is a family post compiled by Chili and all the little peppers.

I knew when Allen had to be away this week that some catastrophe would arise. It always does. Mom swears that he plans it that way. Although, she says, she can't figure out how he knows just when to skip town.

It all started Monday night when I woke with aches and pains in every muscle of my body. You know that feeling that can only be the flu. My mom thinks I have the swine flu.

"Unto Thee, O God, do we give thanks." Psalm 75:1

I am grateful for Advil. Our ancient ancestors had no escape from the misery of the flu.

"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ:" Epehesians 5:20

I am grateful that I am not throwing up and running a fever like others who have had it before me.

Yesterday morning we discovered a leak under my kitchen sink.

"And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him." Colossians 3:17

I am grateful for Nathaniel and Brianna who climbed under the sink to clean up the mess.

"By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name." Hebrews 13:15

I am thankful for the shop vacuum, Marvin, that sucked the water up.

"Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name." Psalm 100:4

I am thankful for the giant bottle of dawn detergent that held the pipe up until my brother could stop by in the evening to take a look at it.

My brother, Frank, stopped by after work, on his way to church, to look at the pipe. It was cracked and needed replacement.

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." Colossians 3:15

I am grateful that my brother was willing to take time from his schedule to try to fix it.

"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57

He had to go to Home Depot for parts. I am thankful for Home Depot and for cars to get there and the Arabs who provide us with fuel (even if we pay out the nose for it.)

"O Give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good; for His mercy endureth forever." 1 Chronicles 16:34

I am grateful that he took the boys with him and that the boys had a blast with their Uncle.

"Therefore will I give thanks unto Thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name. Great deliverance giveth He to His king: and showeth mercy to His anointed..." Psalm 18:49-50a

I am grateful that he found the parts for $6.

Next, the power supply to my laptop broke. The very one that we replaced just before I left on vacation. And my battery, which is less than a year old, is shot.

"To the end that my glory may sing praise to Thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee forever." Psalm 30:12

I am grateful that even though it won't charge my computer, Kaitlin's power supply will run my laptop and for a warranty to replace my power supply and battery.

While Frank and the boys were at Home Depot four leaks started in the basement ceiling. Yes, the same ceiling my dear husband spent all last winter installing. The same ceiling tiles that I convinced him to spend way more on because they looked nicer than the standard drop ceiling tiles.

"I will give thee thanks in great congregation. I will praise thee among much people." Psalm 35:18

I am grateful for a husband that can replace the ceiling tiles and for the money that God will supply to buy the materials.

"Unto Thee, O God do we give thanks, unto Thee do we give thanks: for that Thy name is near Thy wondrous works declare." Psalm 75:1

I am thankful that Kaitlin was in the basement and saw the leak before the water damaged the wood floors and the extra dining room chairs sitting there.

"O give thanks unto the LORD: call upon His name: make known His deeds among the people." Psalm 105:1

I am thankful for the pots that caught the water and the towels that dried things up.

We have a very elaborate water system. There are valves and knobs everywhere. We couldn't figure out where the main shut off was.

"Sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him: talk ye of all His wondrous works." Psalm 105:2

I am thankful for cell phones so that I could call Allen and ask him where it was.

Next, Frank showed up with the boys and said he saw it was a problem but couldn't help fix it because he had to get to the prayer meeting.

"At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto Thee because of Thy righteous judgments. I am a companion of all them that fear Thee, and to them that keep Thy precepts. The earth, O LORD, is full of Thy mercy: teach me Thy statutes. Thou has dealt well with Thy servant, O LORD, according to Thy word." Psalm 119:62-65

I am grateful that God controlled my mouth so that I didn't tell him he was a knucklehead and schmuck for walking out on his sister and all the kids while we had no water in the house and no one had eaten dinner and for a brother who knows and loves the LORD.

I am also thankful for the understanding man who came to my door, and I thought he was a salesman (but I later found out he was only seeking directions.) That when the kids told me there was someone at the door, and I said very loudly, "Unless he is a plumber tell him to go away!" I am thankful for his understanding, kindness and graciousness to forgive me and offer his words of encouragement.

"For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did He in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places." Psalm 135:5-6

I am thankful that we have pots and pans to cook in, food to fix in them and plates to serve it on.

"For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that which I give thanks?" 1 Corinthians 10:30

I am grateful for my parents-in-law who drove nearly an hour one way to come to my house at night to help fix the mess... even if it could not be fixed.

"I thank my God..." 1 Corinthians 14:18a

I am grateful that we have running water in the rest of the house even if there is none in the kitchen.

"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place." 2 Corinthians 2:14

I am grateful for children who don't complain about dragging dirty dishes to the bathtub to wash them. I am grateful for paper plates and plastic silver ware.

"Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meat to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:" Colossians 1:12

I am grateful that even though there is a very stinky smell coming from my kitchen drain, it is in the 70's and I can leave the windows open. I am also thankful for Yankee Candles to cover up the odor with some artificial fall scent.

My email went down this morning. But I am grateful for the modern convenience of email. And for all the friends and loved ones who email me encouraging words. And for all those emails I will be able to read when it is fixed.

"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I am grateful for a husband who keeps things in good working order so that when he is away I notice all that he does for us. I am thankful that he will be home tonight and will know just what to do to fix things up.

  2. Ciao Kat!
I love my pc now! My cousin has formatted it and now the viruses are gone...(I don't want to say it too loud...). He gave me a gift, a strong antivirus, so now I hope I will not have problems anymore! Viruses are really terrible! This morning I have made a scan and the antivirus found 2 virues, but made its task! I didn't have any antivirus before, because the virus didn't allow me to install and scan!!!
I'm so happy now, I can post with no problems! It's funny!
I'm sure your dad knows Vittorio De Sica. Ask him if he has seen "Pane, amore e fantasia" and "Pane, amore e gelosia" with Vittorio De Sica and Gina Lollobrigida. These are wonderful films!

    GET WELL SOON!
    Hugs,
    Manuela
