Which One Are You Again?

Around here, names take all kinds of twists and turns.  I could go on for quite some time about the many nicknames Allen has given our children.  And other people's children for that matter.  But let's not get sidetracked.

He makes up little rhymes that go with the kids names.  There are so  many that the kids themselves aren't exactly sure what to answer to anymore.  Certain ones have stuck and become regular fixtures though.  Emma Rosie dosie, Than the Man and Aedan Joelie Pockamolie.  (No I don't know if that is spelled right because it hardly resembles the actual name I wrote on my sweet son's birth certificate.)

One evening, Aedan and Allen were out in the back yard trimming a tree.  Allen cut the branches into lengths for firewood and just as quickly Aedan hauled them to the wood pile.  When he picked up a piece that seemed quite large compared to his little frame Allen was quite impressed and tried to praise him in the way men are accustomed to.

"Aedan," his proud father said, "You are the man!"

Aedan, confused by the breech in nickname etiquette, completely missed the compliment.  Instead he looked at Allen and said, "Pa, I thought Than was the man."

  3. Kat,

What a great story about being a "Man" in your life. Wonder what Allen's reply was to him then?

  4. Hope,

You are so funny! When I accidentally call my kids by the wrong name, we have this joke and when they are all standing around looking at me confused trying to figure out what I am talking about or who is supposed to do what… I look at them and say, “Tell me your name, and don’t lie to me because you live here and I will figure out who you are.” Also, at times I will look at them and say, “You know what I mean.” Fortunately, they are really good sports about their tongue tied and sometimes senile Mama.

    Hugs,

    Kat

  5. Kat,

You are always so inquisitive! I love that about you. Allen explained that “Than the man” was part of Than’s nickname but that “You are the man” is the same as saying, “You are a tough hard worker.” Yes, Aedan beamed!

    Hugs,

  8. My grandma (on my dad's side) has four children and twelve grandchildren, and we just discovered that, unintentionally, all sixteen names start with either an L, M, J, C or S! So, that can get a little confusing. Often we end up getting called by our cousins' names, or siblings' names or even parents/aunts' names! So Grandma, if she's having a momentary blank, has this rule: "If I'm looking at you, I mean *you*!" (no matter *what* I call you) :)

  9. What rhymes with Gabriel? Or maybe I shouldn't ask ...

Love the post :) And he has every right to be confused!

  10. Di,

I posed your question to Allen and he said that he can't come up with a name until he meets Gabe in person. I quote, "It is not just about rhyming but about personality, too."

Give him 24 hours after you all get here and we'll have a suitable name!

    Love,

    An adoring Zia
