Watermelon Eating Contest

Our family loves watermelon.  Even ice cream takes a back seat to this summer time treat.  For some reason the kids got it in their head that they would like to have a watermelon eating contest. We told them we would do it for the Labor Day holiday.  It seemed like a great addition to our last weekend of Summer and swimming and cook outs.  Who knew it would rain the whole day?

Just the same, our word is our word.  So Monday afternoon, we headed to town where each girl was paired up with a boy.  Each team chose a watermelon.  Elisabeth got one for the rest of us to have for dessert.

And there you have it.  Four watermelons.  Even for our family, that looks like a lot.  (How do you like those new counter tops?  Post coming soon.)
Yours truly got to cut them all up.
And here are the reserves.  Don't they look beautiful?  Between you and me, they didn't taste as good as they looked.
Samuel is really looking forward to being able to eat as much watermelon as he wants.
Brianna, however, is wondering what she got herself into.
And I am just having enough to be my dessert.
No one seemed to agree on the rules.  Some kids said it was to see who ate the most.  Some said it was to see who could finish their melon.  Some said the challenge was to see who could do it the fastest.  Regardless, Allen told them all to put their hands in the air until he said, "GO!"

Kaitlin tried to get a head start.
And they were off!
I threatened to beat anyone who made themselves sick.  Samuel took me literally and decided to just eat what he enjoyed and save the rest for another time.  It was cute watching him sit there and relish each bite while the other kids were chewing as fast as they could.
Allen and I commented on how our dining table had never been so quiet at dessert time before.
Watching the progress pile up!
In the end, Nathaniel ate the most, but Brianna finished the timed portion (1/4) faster than anyone else with a time of 3 minutes and 45 seconds.
The next morning the kids asked if we could have the leftovers for breakfast.  Of course, I said yes.  Although, I was shocked they wanted to look at watermelon again.

When Elisabeth climbed in her high chair and saw watermelon, she insisted that Pa get the timer and that everyone put their hands above their heads until Pa said, "GO!"

  1. I LOVE IT!!! Watermelon takes a backseat to ice cream for me too, which really says a lot because I love ice cream! I wish I could have joined in on the fun!

And I love the Mark Twain quote. :)

  2. Hehe, we love watermelon at my house! :) This summer we've eaten probably 5 or 6 watermelon. My sister, two cousins (one local, one visiting from up north) and I had similar contests, though the competitive-ness came through me and my (local) cousin the most. ;)
    Great post!! :)

  4. You guys do such fun stuff! Love it!

I have declared for the first time ever this summer that watermelon is my absolute favorite fruit. I purchased 5 or 6 of them through the summertime and every. single. one. was delicious!! That never happens. We grew a few and they were very small, but sweet.

Ah, now you have me in the mood for watermelon. Yum.
