Black Eyed Susans

Black Eyed Susans are the state flower of Maryland.  They tell me the things grow like weeds.  But I have never had much success growing them.  I love their cheerful yellow heads and will continue to produce some semblance of a plant in my garden.  In the meantime, I will continue to depend on the ones that grow in the wild.

I remember the first year we lived out here and the Black Eyed Susans were in full bloom.  We were driving home from church one Sunday and I begged Allen to stop so I could cut some.  I think he rolled his eyes.
Saturday we were headed into town and Samuel caught sight of the blooms all along the highway.
He asked if we could stop and cut some.  I told him I knew of the perfect place to go cut a bouquet but we couldn't stop right now because we would be late.  But when he asked when, I promised Sunday on the way home from church.
Sunday morning on the way to worship, he reminded me we were going to cut flowers on the way home.
And on the way home, he again reminded us to stop to make a bouquet.  He was so delighted with his pickings, he didn't mind wandering through the itchy thickets or thorns or anything.  He was just thrilled to be in the moment with the yellow flowers.
He reminds me a lot of someone else I know.

  1. Good evening, precious friend~

I am glad to know I am not the only one that stops along the side of the road to pick flowers! lol Black Eyed Susans are one of my favorites.....actually ANY flower is my favorite! :D

I wonder where Samuel gets his love of flowers from? :D

  2. Isn't that true? I love my gardens... you know that. People always ask me what my favorite flower is... and the only answer I can give is, "What's in bloom today?"
